Overseas Internships Broaden Your Global Résumé to Enhance Career Development

Due to a challenging trend of internationalization, KUAS has been actively promoting overseas internships to boost students’ competitive career capacity and employability. Right now in July, there are 95 students from 13 departments participating in summer internships abroad. KUAS expects that through the integration of curriculum with applied learning, industry-academia cooperation and practical work training, students will be able to be equipped with professional skills in broadening their global résumé and career development.

“In fact, by the Fall of 2017, there will be 111 students (mostly juniors and seniors) successively sent to do overseas internships in countries such as China, Japan, Vietnam, Singapore and Canada, which helps prepare students with cross-disciplinary competency to face increasingly international competition, ” KUAS President Yang said.

Also, President Yang pointed out that KUAS, originally known as the Provincial Kaohsiung Institute of Technology, has developed over 120,000 alumni worldwide since its establishment in 1963. They have become the best supporting partners to KUAS students by providing a variety of internship opportunities to facilitate a smooth transition into the job market after graduation. The KUAS alumni-owned and affiliated businesses, Hi-P International Limited and Airmate Electrical Co. for example, have long contributed to assisting students in connecting their overseas experiences to their future career goals.

On the other hand, since 2010, nearly 100 students have completed overseas hospitality internships arranged by the Department of Tourism Management. In the coming academic year, there will be 16 students selected to participate in hotel internships at Mandarin Oriental and Sentosa World in Singapore, Hidden Ridge Resort in Canada and Hotel Sunbird in Japan—all have cooperated with KUAS over ten years. Additionally, two more hotels in Japan will be added to the list of internship possibilities: Hotel Metropolitan Nagano famous for top service and Gora Kadan, the second most expensive hotel.

Two students who are going to intern abroad share their internship expectations. One expects that the internship experiences will bring the theoretical and practical together in hands-on application and prepare him for a solid career in the future job market. Also, gaining cross- cultural experiences and enlarging his world views will be one of the great benefits of interning abroad. And the other student who is going to Singapore for a one-year internship hopes that she will gain a better insight into the practical experience she needs to get ahead in her field. Moreover, she expects to be more proactive and independent in learning new things and adapting to a multicultural environment. She is confident that overseas internships will bring her an unforgettable and joyful memory.
